Trinity CertTESOL - now Level 5 of the National Qualifications Framework
The Trinity College London CertTESOL was accredited at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (the NQF) by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in England (Please note that the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) has recently taken over the role previously carried out by QCA), and the corresponding authorities in Wales and Northern Ireland in September 2002.
Level 4 is regarded as comparable, in terms of assessment standards, to the first year of an undergraduate degree offered in the UK.
However, to take account of developments in qualifications and standards for teacher training provision in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and agreements between Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) and awarding bodies (examination boards) over the past year, Trinity's CertTESOL has been re-accredited from Level 4 to Level 5.
The Trinity Diploma TESOL remains at Level 7 in line with its exact counterparts. The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector remains at Level 5. Level 5 is regarded as comparable in difficulty to the second year of an undergraduate degree.
Please note: Anyone holding a Trinity College London certificate for the CertTESOL at Level 4 is advised to print a copy of this statement to attach to their certificate when seeking employment and/or further training opportunities. Former trainees who have lost their Level 4 certificates will have to follow the usual procedures in applying for a replacement, and this will state Level 4 as this was the original level of their certificate. All certificates for trainees whose courses ended on or after 1 March 2010 will receive Level 5 certificates.

The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL) is a TESOL or TEFL ( Teaching English as a Foreign Language ) certificate designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English. It equips candidates with the basic skills and knowledge needed to take up a first post as an ESOL teacher. It gives an introduction to the theory and practice of contemporary English teaching and an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher.
It is accepted by the British Council as an initial TESOL or TEFL qualification for teachers in its accredited teaching organisations in the UK and in its own teaching operations overseas. Credits are also awarded towards degree programmes offered by the Open University in the UK.
