The new Brass Syllabus 2010-2012 is now available.

Trinity Guildhall Brass Syllabus 2010-2012

This syllabus contains full details of Grade examinations in French Horn, Eb Tenor Horn, Trumpet, Bb Cornet, Flugel Horn, Eb Soprano Cornet, Euphonium, Baritone, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba, Eb Bass and Bb Bass.

The syllabus includes refreshed repertoire, as well as extended repertoire lists for Euphonium Bass and Treble Clef readers.

The consistency of repertoire range across all instruments is ideal for group teaching and the focused scale requirements place emphasis on technical control rather than the number of scales learned.

Examination candidates play three pieces chosen from the published list(s) and for the technical work all candidates play a Lip Flexibility Exercise, after which they may chose to play either Scales & Arpeggios or Exercises.

For brass examinations there are two further tests.  Up to and including Grade 5, candidates may choose any two tests from: Aural, Sight Reading (including transposition for French Horn from Grade 4 and Trumpet from Grade 6), Improvisation and Musical Knowledge

In Grades 6, 7 and 8, Sight Reading is compulsory, but candidates may still choose between Aural and Improvisation.

Scales & Exercises for Soprano Cornet, Bass Trombone and Bb Tuba players reading in Bass Clef are available to download from the panel on the right.  Scales & Exercises for all other Brass instruments* are available from your local music shop or from our online store.

There is a one session overlap arrangement between the current and the new syllabus and during the first session of 2010 candidates may offer repertoire from the 2007–2009 syllabus.

The new syllabus for Brass supercedes all previously published repertoire lists. The syllabus has also been broken down by instrument into smaller components to aid download times and should be viewed in conjunction with Information and Regulations 2009.

*Please note that French Horn players have their own publication, Scales & Exercises for French Horn, and Trombone players have their own publication Scales & Exercises for Trombone, and should not use the publication Scales & Exercises for Treble Clef Brass.
